New International Institute Launched to Champion Global Drive for Software-Based Economic Growth

International Institute for Software Economics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship | 23 Nov 2009

Growing global interest in harnessing the economic potential of local software development communities around the world has prompted the establishment of an international non-profit institute focused on serving the research and education needs of IT entrepreneurs and innovators.

The International Institute for Software Economics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Inc. (IISEIE) has been established with strong support from key industry participants including research organizations, software companies, and respected industry practitioners from the global software sector.

Launched at a recent Microsoft innovation summit in Redmond, Wash., the IISEIE’s founding members include Microsoft Corp., Southern Cross University and Agitavi Group, a global information and communications technologies (ICT) research and consultancy provider.

Research over recent years[1] confirms the sustained economic and productivity benefits achieved by communities that leverage ICT development and innovation.

“As a non-partisan, not-for-profit champion of the benefits of building and growing economies – and communities – around the globe through software, the IISEIE has been structured as a world-class collaborative network which seeks research and industry based program opportunities, and supports their execution via professional communities, virtual enterprises and a common shared services infrastructure,” said Malcolm Fraser, IISEIE’s Chief Executive Officer.

“The IISEIE has also been established to facilitate software industry access for researchers, enable exchange opportunities for industry practitioners, and to develop professional standards in software business management practices,” Mr. Fraser said.

A fundamental enabler of growth for software companies is relevant and contemporary business education. The IISEIE and its members are already involved in research, education and industry development initiatives spanning software economics, software innovation management and software entrepreneurship.

By facilitating and championing such initiatives, the IISEIE will provide an invaluable service aligning industry capabilities with the development needs of local software economies. This alignment will benefit practitioners and organizations engaged in activities across the industry, including professional practitioners, technology vendors, academics and researchers.

Governments and government agencies will also be able to benefit from the IISEIE’s global reach and expertise by utilizing the Institute’s specialist government advisory service. This service draws on IISEIE members’ extensive collective knowledge and skills to deliver top-level counsel to governments seeking to enhance economic development through world-class ICT strategies, policies and initiatives.

Benefits for start-ups, established corporates, governments, learning and research institutions, and individuals involved in the ICT sector who engage with the IISEIE will include:
· For Technology Vendors – Access to world-class education and training in software business management and entrepreneurship best practices. Access to co-sponsorship opportunities with aligned researchers working in relevant software economics, innovation and entrepreneurship industry niches.
· For Industry Practitioners – Promotion of professional certification as ‘best of bred’. Connection to relevant software research, learning and professional development. Ability to scope marketplace business and career opportunities via the IISEIE’s collaborative networks and virtual enterprises.
· For Academics – Facilitation of collaborative research. Opportunities to network with software industry executives and fellow academic institutions. Access to best-practice software industry curricula content and applied research for course offerings. Potential post graduates flow via industry professionals.
· For Researchers – Access to IISEIE’s international research agenda, covering a diverse body of ICT industry knowledge, addressing contemporary global topics with local experiences and case studies. Facilitation of research opportunities and assistance with access and connections to the software industry.
· For Governments – Access to global experts working in the field of ICT-based economic development who have experience in strategy development and policy execution at a government level.

All organizations and individuals interested in enquiring about IISEIE membership are invited to apply online via the institute’s website: www.iiseie.org.

[1] According to World Bank research (2009): “for every 10-percentage-point increase in the penetration of broadband services, there is an increase in economic growth of 1.3 percentage points”. An ICT producing sector has been shown to increase aggregate productivity in an economy (OECD, 2002). Increased ICT ‘production’ contributes positively to output, employment, and export earnings, while ICT ‘use’ increases productivity, competitiveness, and growth (OECD, 2004).
