Reading Comprehension Software "Egorg" Version 2.15 Released

Reading Comprehension Software "Egorg" Version 2.15 Released

Virtual Learning Environment Solutions, Inc | 18 Apr 2008

Virtual Learning Environment Solutions, Inc., announced the release of a new version of their inaugural product, Egorg. The product is a software solution to the challenge of teaching struggling middle-school readers to apply comprehension strategies while reading literature.

Unlike most reading software, Egorg does not come with its own reading passages. Instead, the student works interactively while reading assigned text from their chosen English curriculum. Egorg keeps the student applying proven reading strategies while working. It is appropriate for a setting in which the student activities are structured and guided, such as a reading lab in a school or in a home-school or tutoring environment.

Furthermore, the information entered by the student is displayed as graphic organizers, a strategy thought by experts to help students who are better at learning visual information than verbal information.

In fact, says the company's founder Dr. Daniel Himes, the name Egorg comes from an abbreviation of “electronic graphic organizer.”

“People have different strengths and weaknesses as learners,” said Himes. “Our mission is not to take a weakness and make it strong, but rather to teach the students how to take information and recast it into a form to which they can apply their strengths. Egorg does this for the visual learner, specifically in the area of literature.”

One of the primary features new in version 2.15 is the ability for the student to print a “report” of all the completed graphic organizers at once, complete with a cover page.

The website, http://www.egorg.com/, emphasizes that Egorg is not a game or a babysitter and requires real work on the part of the student. “Some of our pilot tests have found that the students need to be held accountable for doing the work, because they are learning a new skill and it is not easy for them. In the end it is worth it because they've taken a situation that was hopeless and made it achievable,” said Himes. In these times of stressed budgets and rising expectations, Egorg may be able to deliver some relief to superintendents and teachers everywhere.
